Demand for electric is down around 9% YOY and yet official GDP estimates are for 7% or 8% growth. In the US a 1% decrease in GDP usually equals a .6% decrease in electric demand on average. This change seems consistent with what we are seeing in Japan although GDP is down 8% in the last quarter in Japan. China is full of shit if they think the economy is growing at 8%! HUANENG POWER INTERNATIONAL, INC. Announces Power Generation in the First Quarter of 2009 (Beijing, China, April 14, 2009) Huaneng Power International, Inc. (the “Company”) (NYSE: HNP;HKEx: 902; SSE: 600011) today announces its power generation in the first quarter of 2009. According to the Company’s preliminary statistics, for the three months ended 31 March 2009, the Company’s total domestic power generation on consolidated basis amounted to 41.824 billion kWh, representing a decrease of 9.28% over the same period in 2008. The decrease was mainly due to the deterioration of the global economy as a result of the international financial crisis. Power demand in the domestic market declined, thereby leading to a negative growth in the Company’s power generation. Reacting proactively to the adverse impact on power generation caused by the current economic situation, the Company had strengthened its marketing efforts and formulated effective strategic measures. In the first quarter of 2009, seven power plants of the Company recorded positive growth in power generation from the same period last year, including Hebei Shang’an Power Plant, Zhejiang Yuhuan Power Plant, Henan Qinbei Power Plant, Jiangsu Nanjing Power Plant, Jiangsu Taicang Power Plant, Shanghai Combined-cycle Power Plant and Jiangsu Jinling Combined-cycle Power Plant.
