Officials attending an international conference on managing Japanese eel resources have agreed to reduce by 20 percent annual catches of young eels used for farming.

Delegates from Japan, China, South Korea and Taiwan ended their 2-day meeting in Tokyo on Wednesday. They hope to save the Japanese eel from extinction.

Japan‘s fisheries agency said all sides agreed to the 20-percent reduction from this year, starting in November. It‘s the first global framework for managing the species.

Before the conference, Japan proposed a larger cut in catches.

But after undergoing tough negotiations at the meeting, Japanese delegates decided to accept a smaller cut, citing the importance of creating a framework first.

Following the agreement, Japan‘s fisheries agency will start work to allot an upper limit of young fish for domestic eel farmers for cultivation.

Masanori Miyahara from the fisheries ministry, who chaired the meeting, said the agreement calls for voluntary efforts from all sides. He added that this is the first step toward managing eel resources but it is not yet perfect.
